Evelyn Preer was one of the most celebrated Black actresses of the early screen era — a Chicago artist whose legacy nearly disappeared from public memory. The Dark Swan returns her to the center of the story. Not as a footnote. As living inheritance.
Raven is not asking the room to define her. She is stepping into the full truth of what she carries. Your support ensures that story is told at full cinematic scale — with the choreography, cinematography, and sound design it deserves. Not compromised. Complete.
A South Side Chicago story, made by a South Side Chicago filmmaker, with a crew rooted in this community. Every dollar raised pays the artists, dancers, and craftspeople who live here. The film is the mission. The mission is the film.
Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Raised in Chicago. One of the most celebrated Black actresses of her era — a woman who starred in nineteen films, performed Oscar Wilde on Broadway with an all-Black company, and recorded alongside Duke Ellington.
She refused to wear blackface to keep a studio contract. She walked away from everything rather than erase herself to survive.
She died at 36. And the world moved on without saying her name.
She refused to disappear.
This film is proof that she didn't.
